The small coastal town of Sandnessjøen on the island of Alsta is  gateway to the magnificent Helgeland coast. A regional hub with airport, ferry and express ferry connections, the town is a good starting point for boat tours around the beautiful archipelago, island hopping, cycling and hiking.

The imposing Seven Sisters mountain range is nearby. This majestic chain of craggy peaks rising to 1,000 metres above the shoreline has been the regular hiking ground of Queen Sonja of Norway.

Sandnessjøen also has a medieval church, a spectacular museum designed by the famous architects ‘Snøhetta’ and a Viking chieftain’s longhouse with its own banqueting hall where you can taste Viking food.
