1937: Delivery of M/S DANA. This ship was built on behalf of the Danish Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. The DANA was designed and built as an ocean-going ice class ship. During its period of service for the Danish government, it was frequently used for marine biological research, not only in Danish waters but also in international ones.
1939: Extended by 9 metres 1980: The DANA was sold and sailed under the name of DANA Researcher for Bertra international.
1984: The DANA Researcher was sold to Esvagt. After sailing for many years as a research ship and on all the oceans, DANA was used as an offshore support ship. The ship was used for offshore support for several years under her new name of Esvagt DANA.
2000: The Esvagt DANA was sold to the Danish Nyborg Nautical College. Then the Esvagt DANA was renamed the DANA Nyborg. During this period, the ship was used as a training ship for the Danish Nautical College. Many a young Danish seaman made his first sea voyage on this old lady.
2007: The DANA was sold to P&T Charters in 2007. These entrepreneurs from the commercial sailing sector are converting this ship into a fast three-masted topsail schooner.
The “Gulden leeuw” has been designed by the renowned ship’s architects’ office of KHMB Y&S Design/Korner and is being converted by the Balk Royal Shipyard at Urk. With so much expertise around us, the ship is of course being successfully rebuilt.
Sail Training means facing challenges head on, learning about yourself and others, accepting responsibilities and boosting your confidence. During our one-of-a-kind Sail Training program, trainees are part of the crew. Sailing, steering, navigation, cooking and cleaning are all elements of the program, with taking over the ship as the ultimate goal.
Sail Training trips
We have several trips available; specifically for youth travellers aged 15 to 25, individual trips or international exchanges and the like. Every trip has a different character. It is possible to be part of the crew on the Gulden Leeuw. For instance, by sailing with us during the unique international races such as The Tall Ships Races, where thousands of young people meet every year.
Corporate Sail Training
The GULDEN LEEUW also offers Corporate Sail Training. What better place to organise, let’s say, a management training course or assessments? Find out how you function within a team. Which role would you accept? Can you practice what you preach? Just 3 days at sea will show everyone’s true colours. Our special program will guide you and help you find your strong suits.
The most beautiful events are organised all over the world. And we like to take part in them. Our ship is also available for corporate hospitality outside of these maritime parties. We understand how important your event is. Together, we can make it into something wonderful. We bring together the best catering to fit the atmosphere of your event perfectly at the same time honouring the nautical aspect. We also like to think about any additional possibilities. A special invitation, a combination of a seminar and a drink, or perhaps even branding.
Here, on the Gulden Leeuw, we want to offer your guests an experience. Making it possible to experience the emotion of being out at sea on a magnificent Tall Ship for a day or night. To be overwhelmed by the vastness of the ship, the sensation of sailing and our marvellous service-oriented crew. But also to create the feeling that people can feel at home. Finding the perfect balance between these aspects is our main goal.
The GULDEN LEEUW can take 200 people on board for a day trip and thus has the largest capacity of any Tall Ship in the Netherlands. This ship is a unique location to bring together this many people, out on the water: think of company events, product presentations, incentives, relation management, anniversaries, ceremonies, receptions and weddings. The ship has an exceptional multifunctional layout. But perhaps our state-of-mind is even more important: on board with us, anything is possible.
SCHOOL – SHIP
The world presented on a silver platter and the ship as your classroom. It’s all possible. The GULDEN LEEUW is home to many students from all over the world for many months out of the year.
We are proud to be part of the education for young people. By doing this, we hope to contribute to their development.
During these months, the ship is turned into an actual school, including classrooms in our deckhouse. Seven teachers will be accompanying them on this trip and provide custom classes. At sea, the students help keep watch and take care of their ship. They study hard, because as soon as they moor at the docks, there are many activities planned in order to discover the world, like riding camels in Morocco, rafting in the jungle of Costa Rica or visiting the Maya temples in Belize.
GULDEN LEEUW is partners with Class Afloat. This renowned organisation was established in 1984 and is a prominent player in the field of experimental education. Our collaboration mainly originated because Class Afloat’s high-quality academic program and the special Sail Training program of the GULDEN LEEUW go hand in hand.
